Con el desarrollo de la lógica contemporánea el uso de una simbología similar a la tradicionalmente utilizada por los matemáticos se ha vuelto un instrumento casi imprescindible para el tratamiento de los problemas de la lógica. Las obras que, prescindiendo de tal simbología, han versado sobre problemas lógicos han sido consideradas - en muchos casos justificadamente - como arcaicas, y sus autores como incapaces de entender la naturaleza de la disciplina que pretenden estudiar. Así, un lógico contemporáneo de los méritos innegables de E.W. Beth ha dicho de Husserl que éste ni ha sido capaz de entender la obra de Gottlob Frege ni ha hecho contribución alguna a la lógica.
