In recent years, the translation and academic interest in graphic novels has grown. The translation of these texts to foreign languages allows people to discover and immerse themselves in different cultures, behaviors, politics, and history, which contribute to the readers’ deeper understanding of the world. This project discusses the history of Puerto Rico with the United States, the current political climate of the island, and the benefits of translating graphic novels. Additionally, it explores the difficulties of translating Puerto Rican graphic novels to audiences unfamiliar with Puerto Rican jargon, culture, or subcultures, as well the historical context used for the stories being told. The texts translated for this project are Días Vol. 1 and four comics from Rapiña/Carroña by Días Comics, a Puerto Rican collective of illustrators. Furthermore, this project aims to shed light on Puerto Rican art, for there is something to be said of the limited access Puerto Rico has in the arts, especially literature in foreign language countries. Therefore, translating graphic novels from Puerto Rico and by Puerto Ricans is a step in the right direction.
