| en_US |
dc.description.abstract | A black female with afro-curly hair does not fit into the standards of Puerto Rican beauty. “The White washed hispanophile notion has been traditionally endorsed by the elitist and dominant sectors of Puerto Rican society. This is the dominant ideal, for example, the selection process of beauty Queens for Puerto Rico’s many beauty pageants”. (Godreau 2022:99) That being the case, we are raised in a culture when afro-curly haired women are taught and encouraged since childhood to alter their hair by straightening it, simply to disguise their roots in order to be accepted in society for having “pretty” and “aesthetically pleasing” hair. As result, our culture has promoted this standard so much that it is now seen as the norm to alter natural afro-curly hair, not allowing girls be able to choose or decide if this is really what we want. Afro hair should not been seen as a style of hair or fashion trend; carrying with pride natural hair is black pride, it’s identity and acceptance. Afro-descendant hair in Puerto Rico: The route to acceptance is a project of cultural management, focused in the awareness and acceptance of afro-curly hair as a cultural element, as well as to promote the recognition of the afro-descendant women of Puerto Rico. Whit this, we will have a look at the history of afro hair, the discrimination that occurred and it has articulated this fight in Puerto Rico of the XXI century. | en_US |
