La huella femenina en el coleccionismo arqueológico de Puerto Rico : el caso de Alice Loughran de Santiago

Abstract

Puerto Rico has an extensive and complex history of archaeological collecting. Although very important information has been generated on the various actors involved in this type of activity, there are figures who were participating in the sale, exchange and donation of archaeological artifacts that have gone unnoticed. This is the case of Alice Loughran de Santiago, a woman who became very active in the world of archaeological collecting and interacted with figures and institutions in Puerto Rico and abroad. This work addresses part of those activities that she carried out with museums in the United States and the exchanges she had with research ers such as Franz Boas, Jesse Walter Fewkes and Ma nuel Zeno Gandía, among others. In addition, the mul tiple efforts she made to address the subject that was of greatest interest to her, the enigmatic Father Nazario Stones, are documented. Puerto Rico cuenta con un extenso y complejo historial de coleccionismo arqueológico. Aunque se ha generado información muy importante sobre los diversos actores involucrados en este tipo de gestión, existen figuras que estuvieron participando en la venta, la permuta y dona ción de piezas arqueológicas que han pasado desaperci bidas. Este es el caso de Alice Loughran de Santiago, una mujer que se incorporó de manera muy activa en el mundo del coleccionismo arqueológico e interactuó con figuras e instituciones de Puerto Rico y del exterior. Este trabajo aborda parte de esas actividades que ella realizó con museos en los Estados Unidos y los intercambios que sostuvo con investigadores tales como Franz Boas, Jesse Walter Fewkes y Manuel Zeno Gandía, entre otros. Además, se documentan las múltiples gestiones que hizo para abordar el tema que le fue de mayor interés: las enigmáticas Piedras del Padre Nazario.
