Two new species of Toxonotus Lacordaire, 1866 (Coleoptera: Anthribidae: Platystomini) from Puerto Rico and adjacent islands
(2021-07-09)
Species in the genus Toxonotus (Lacordaire, 1866) are described for the first time in Puerto Rico and its jurisdictions. Two new species are described, annotated with digital images, and added to a key to the genus: Toxonotus borboroulous n. sp. from Puerto Rico and Vieques Island and Toxonotus ochrothrixus n. sp. from Mona Island. These species belong to the family Anthribidae, commonly known as Fungus Weevils, which are a group of beetles with some species that feed on fungus. Specimens were described morphologically using comparisons to digitally imaged specimens and published records. Diagnostic characteristics were used to place both species into a new key for the entire genus Toxonotus. Supplemental habitus images and genitalia line drawings were edited digitally. Both new species were nearly identical to described Nearctic species and were differentiated by vestiture and color. Types are stored at the University of Puerto Rico Invertebrate Collection (UPRM INVCOL)....

No guts, no reef: Understanding the microbiome, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships of the Puerto Rican long-spined black sea urchin, Diadema antillarum, a keystone species of the Caribbean reef
(2020-11-17)
In this paper we describe the gut microbiome of the Puerto Rican keystone sea urchin Diadema antillarum. We also used next generation sequencing of the cytochrome b region to examine the phylogenetic relationships among ...
Determination of invasion stage of the tokay gecko (Gekko gecko) in Puerto Rico: A comparison between two invasion sites
(2021-05-10)
Invasive species have brought ecological and economical losses worldwide and are expected to increase with continuing globalization. Ecologically, invasive species pose threats to local fauna through competition and/or ...
Population structure and distribution of a new population of the endagered Aristida portoricensis (Poaceae) in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico
(2021-07)
The genus "Aristida" (Poaceae) is a varied and well-distributed group of grass within the subfamily Aristidoideae. In Puerto Rico, we count with an endemic species, "Aristida portoricensis", commonly known as "Pelos del ...
Diet description of Caracolus caracolla (Gastropoda: Camaenidae) in two locations of the north karst of Puerto Rico
(2021-05-12)
The ecology of land snails in Puerto Rico has been studied mainly in events associated with disturbances and in the northwest area of the island. Specifically, many ecological aspects, such as the diet of one of the largest ...
Growth of fungi recovered from coastal mangroves in waste motor oil: A preliminary study for bioremediation
(2021-05-12)
Mangroves are considered complex ecosystems that serve and protect coastlines in tropical
environments. But these are constantly exposed to pollutants from motorboats and nearby
industries with components such as motor ...
Plant functional diversity across two elevational gradients in serpentine and volcanic soils of Puerto Rico
(2020-05-29)
Mountains are model systems for understanding the mechanisms that underlie patterns of biodiversity and ecosystem function. This study disentangles the effects of climatic and edaphic properties on patterns of trait variation ...
Effects of forest cover on the recovery of diurnal butterflies (Lepidoptera Papilionoidea) after an extreme disturbance in subtropical humid forests of Puerto Rico
(2020-05-28)
Butterflies represent a model taxon in biodiversity and conservation studies; yet few studies have documented changes in butterfly abundance over time in tropical ecosystems, especially in Puerto Rico or the Caribbean where ...
Molecular and morphological characterization of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 7001 bacteriophages øR3-PR6 and øR3-PR7
(2020-05-26)
Bacteriophages are ubiquitous viral particles found in most environments, such as oceans, rivers, and soil. This wide distribution makes phages one of the most abundant viral types on the planet. Bacteria are outnumbered ...
Effects of dam removal on fish communities in Puerto Rico streams
(2021-07-07)
The island of Puerto Rico has approximately 1,200 rivers and streams that total 9,187 river kilometers in 46 major drainage basins. The flow of these bodies of fresh water is interrupted by approximately 335 artificial ...
