Según los ponentes, la “Descripción geográfica de Puerto Rico”, redactada en 1582 por el bachiller Antonio de Santa Clara y el canónigo Juan Ponce de León, mejor conocida en la historiografía puertorriqueña como la Memoria de Melgarejo, es una de las principales canteras de información sobre todos los aspectos geográficos, humanos, económicos, constructivos, culturales y naturales de la Isla con los que contamos hacia el último cuarto del siglo XVI. Su estudio y análisis son reveladores de los distintos asuntos relativos a la flora y fauna en la Isla. Los usos que los españoles daban a distintas plantas, árboles y frutos de la tierra, muchos de ellos de origen indígena, africano o importados por los europeos, así como de diversos animales introducidos por estos, nos permiten visualizar el grado de arraigo de los pobladores españoles en el entorno isleño. La charla solo pretende mostrar la variedad de plantas y animales que formaron parte de la dieta española o el uso variado que les dieron en la Isla, así como la utilización de ciertos árboles conforme a las necesidades materiales de los pobladores.
