Abstract
The Support Program for the Emerging Artist (PAAF) was developed at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Undergraduate Learning (CRiiAS) at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, with the goal of complementing the academic, practical, and professional development of undergraduate students from the Department of Fine Arts, that are part of the program. This research aims to document the implementation of the program, that provided the following tools: formative support, workshops, seminars, professional artist studio visits, and opportunities for both group and solo exhibitions. The study employed a qualitativedescriptive approach within a participatory action research (PAR) design, which acknowledges students as active agents in the production of knowledge. The methodology was organized into three interrelated phases: documentary review and case analysis from the 2022–2023, 2023–2024, and 2024–2025 academic years; informal conversations or experiential narratives; and analysis of student perception evaluations. The theoretical framework was grounded in the works of John Dewey on experiential learning, Pierre Bourdieu on cultural capital, and David Throsby on cultural industries. The findings showed that the PAAF enhanced students’ academic and professional skills, fostered artistic self-management, prepared them for graduate studies, and supported their gradual integration into the labor market. Institutional limitations affecting the program’s sustainability were also identified, and recommendations are offered to strengthen its structure, expand its reach, and ensure its continuity within the university context.
