Abstract

In recent years, there has been an advent in research of bio-based materials as sustainable alternatives to construction industry standards. Among these are materials based on the root-like structure of fungi called mycelium composites. There is a lack of investigation into the production process and performance of these composites in tropical conditions such as those in Puerto Rico. This thesis explores the fabrication of architectural systems made of mycelium composites based on locally found natural resources. An evaluation of existing projects and prototyping techniques is conducted to understand the technical requirements to produce the composite. Samples of mycelium composites are grown using local species and substrates. Compressive strength of the mycelium composites is studied to validate their performance as stackable architectural block units. The results guide the design of a series of building components with interlocking properties. Additionally, the components meet the needs of an assembly system that produces roof structures for ephemeral post-emergency housing.
