Abstract

This project involves the concepts of handicrafts, education, and cultural entrepreneurship. Its focus is to give the opportunity of exposure to the practice of handicraft production and sale to young high school students, integrating this activity to the teaching of core subjects. It was decided to put this project in motion in a private school due to the fact that it may serve as a pilot for its incorporation in the public system in Puerto Rico. This project was divided into the following stages: 1) education, in which was organized a talk between artisans and students; 2) integration/practice: the artisan technique was focused on handling clay, and being presented as an activity as a whole integrated into the English class; and 3) exhibition. The methodology used to analyze the activity impact on students was questionnaires and direct observations. The data analyses were centered on the questions that indicated whether the students were familiarized with handicrafts, if they considered handicrafts to be helpful to their learning experience, if they might be interested in taking workshops from artisans, and if they would consider being an artisan as an opportunity for entrepreneurship. I highly recommend the continuing of investigations and project-making related to these topics in order to help develop a cultural learning experience in schools.
