Reconstitución de áreas pasivas y culturalmente dinámicas hacia espacios de encuentro intergeneracionales

Abstract

The document addresses the importance of inclusive urban infrastructure, highlighting the architectural design of recreational, green, and safe spaces as key elements to promote well-being and intergenerational coexistence in urban environments. Using the Sagrado Corazón station of the Tren Urbano in Santurce, Puerto Rico as a case study, it analyzes the current limitations in terms of connectivity, road safety, access to green spaces, and recreational opportunities. Deficiencies around the station are identified, such as the lack of safe pedestrian infrastructure, insufficient recreational areas and green spaces, and issues with criminality. Furthermore, the absence of meaningful meeting points, limits the use of public transportation and affects the quality of life for residents. The development of an intergenerational community center, integrated with green areas, educational, and recreational spaces, could address these challenges, fostering intergenerational interaction, improving safety, and promoting more inclusive and sustainable urban development. The main objective is to create a safe, accessible, and functional environment that integrates the needs of different age groups. The methodology includes analyzing the impact of inadequate infrastructure on quality of life, assessing road safety, and studying the social dynamics in the area. The proposal includes the construction of a multifunctional center with recreational and educational spaces, parks, and habitable areas, designed under the principles of Transit-Oriented Design (TOD), secured architecture using as reference The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs and the 7 principles of Universal Design (inclusive urbanism). This approach aims to enhance social cohesion, reduce inequalities, and provide sustainable solutions for mobility and well-being in dense urban environments. The project aims to be a replicable model for other urban communities with similar problems, promoting equitable and resilient urban development that responds to the needs of all generations.
