Abstract

Bees are essential for pollination, plant biodiversity and food security. This research evaluates the health of Puerto Rican honeybees, Apis mellifera, a unique race, by integrating several indicators at individual, colony and population levels that provide complementary information. The study is structured in three chapters: (1) a historical analysis of honeybee health since Africanization in 1994; (2) an analysis of the national honeybee epidemiological study between 2014 and 2018, comparing local populations with other regions; and (3) an analysis of the environmental impact on honeybee health between 2020 and 2021. The results reveal a decline in honeybee health between 1987 and 2018, possibly influenced by Africanization and lack of collaboration between key actors. Although honey production has remained stable, it does not reflect the true health of honeybees on the island. Climatic and regional variables have a significant impact on the health of bees, which show remarkable resilience to the viruses (DWV, ABPV, LSV-2), Nosema and the Varroa mite. In addition, differences in health were identified according to microhabitat, with unexpected results in urban and non-urban areas. This study provides crucial information to improve bee conservation in Puerto Rico.
