Abstract

DanceSketch is an enhancement for EarSketch that introduces a dance module, expanding its educational potential in computer science through a dynamic and creative learning method. Dancing involves decision-making depending on the point in the music and the state of the choreography, repetition of the same block of dance moves through different portions of the same musical piece, and the re-utilization of blocks of dance moves for different choreographies. This analogy helps strengthen the bond between both topics because it allows the student to use their body as an agent for learning and understanding these topics. By translating code structures into structured movement systems, DanceSketch unites the domains of cognitive, physical, and creative learning, transforming programming into an embodied, interactive, and multimodal educational experience that fosters deeper conceptual understanding, engagement, and long-term retention.<br /> <br /> This project implements 2 main functions added to EarSketch. The first one is fitDance(upperBody, lowerBody, start, end), which allows the user to construct a choreography by adding each dance move separately. The function allows the user to independently control the upper part of the body (from head to waist) and the lower part of the body (from hips to feet), so 2 dance moves can be combined to give the user more creative freedom over their choreography. The second function added is setAvatar(name), which allows the user to select one avatar from a selection, giving the user freedom in choosing which one to use.
