Abstract

Laboratorio Preliminal is a transdisciplinary artistic creation and research space that uses performance, dance, and theater to investigate neurodivergent experience from within, as a research methodology and artistic management tool in the Puerto Rican context. The central question orienting the research is: how does performance transmit neurodivergent experience, rather than simply representing it? This distinction, between transmitting and representing, constitutes the thesis's central epistemological axis. The laboratory has produced three iterations that function simultaneously as artistic works and as case studies: Preliminal (2023), which investigated attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; Abismal (2025), which explored schizophrenia and anxiety; and Ritual (2026), which examines the structural relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder and democratic precarity. Each iteration is an investigation in itself and the three together constitute a methodology. The research is situated within the framework of performance as research and artistic research, in dialogue with the work of Henk Borgdorff, Lucy Cotter, and Annette Arlander, who argue that artistic practice generates knowledge that cannot be produced by any other method. The epistemological framework is complemented by the transdisciplinary theory of Basarab Nicolescu and Michel Maffesoli, whose concept of sensible reason names the epistemology from which the performance laboratory operates. Neurodivergence is approached from an anti-pathological perspective, in dialogue with the disability studies of Rosemarie Garland-Thomson and Leon Hilton's work on neurodivergence and performance. The thesis introduces the concept of extractive worldmaking, to name the mechanism by which the dominant world extracts value from neurodivergent experience, erases its source, and produces solutions that manage the symptom without touching the extractive structure that generates it. The term builds on Nelson Goodman's (1978) notion of worldmaking and is developed in critical dialogue with the work of David Harvey, Silvia Federici, Glen Coulthard, and Lauren Berlant, and proposes an original contribution to the fields of performance studies and cultural management.
