Socio-pragmatic skills in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder : an integrate review of research, theory and practice

Abstract

This dissertation is a state-of-the-art review of research on pragmatic impairment and treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It compares common practices and approaches for aiding sociopragmatic understanding, both practical and theoretical. Additionally, it delves into the linguistic landscape of Puerto Rico, answering questions about laws, language policy and education policy on the island. This research also focuses on research papers, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and other previous research to answer the question as to how we can help this population. We also delve into the subject of bilingualism and language policy and how these affect socio-pragmatic skills. Based on the findings, suggestions for the best practices suited to the needs in Puerto Rico will be made, in light of research concerning what has been done on the island to address pragmatic impairment. It will also analyze new tools, teaching methods, theories and technologies that have been successful in meeting challenges related to pragmatics within the ASD population.
