La importancia y necesidad de documentar el patrimonio cultural intangible : un archivo digital para el teatro universitario nuestro

Abstract

Desde la aprobación de la Convención para la Salvaguardia del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (UNESCO) en el 2003 se han reconocido la importancia de las expresiones culturales intangibles en la formación de identidades socio-culturales colectivas/grupales y la necesidad de tomar medidas para su preservación como fuente de memoria histórica. Por tal razón este trabajo examina las concepciones sobre el patrimonio cultural intangible (PCI), el ámbito teatral – la práctica artística – como categoría del mismo y los intentos salvaguardia de este elemento cultural llegando al análisis de proyectos que buscan destacar la importancia del teatro como PCI, de reconocerlo y preservarlo. Así, se examinaron algunas iniciativas que consideran los archivos digitales como alternativa para la documentación y preservación de las artes teatrales como patrimonio cultural intangible, para la creación de un archivo digital para el grupo Teatro Universitario Nuestro. La gestión de este proyecto llevó a considerar las posibles ventajas y desventajas de la metodología archivística digital y a reflexionar sobre el vinculo entre los archivos, la memoria y la historia (de un colectivo). La realización del proyecto permitió trazar la historia del Teatro Universitario de Bayamón Nuestro, al igual que una lectura sobre el desarrollo de agrupaciones estudiantiles de teatro en Puerto Rico y su impacto en la vida y comunidad universitaria. El Archivo Digital del Teatro Universitario Nuestro se presenta como un ejemplo y posibilidad de documentación y salvaguardia de las artes escénicas y un espacio para reflexionar sobre las tecnologías digitales como método para preservar y difundir el patrimonio cultural intangible.Since the adoption of UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the importance of intangible cultural expressions in the formation of socio-cultural collective identities and the need of safeguarding measures for its preservation as a source of historical memory have been recognized. For this reason, this work examines the different conceptions about intangible cultural heritage (ICH), how theater arts – understood as a type of “performing arts” – is considered a category of intangible cultural heritage in the Convention, and what are some of the attempts to safeguard this type of heritage, leading to an analysis of projects that seek to high light the importance of theater as ICH, and the need to recognize it and preserve it. Thus, this work examines some initiatives that consider digital archives as an alternative for documenting ad preserving theater arts as intangible cultural heritage to support the creation of a digital archive for the University Theater group Nuestro (Teatro Universitario Nuestro). This project led to consider the possible advantages and disadvantages of the digital archiving methodology, as well as reflect on the link between archives, memory and history (of a group). This project helped trace the history of the group Teatro Universitario Nuestro, and provided and image and interpretation of the development of university theater groups in Puerto Rico and their impact on the student community and university life. The Teatro Universitario Nuestro Digital Archive presents itself as an example and possibility of documenting and safeguarding the theater arts and as a space to reflect on and consider digital technologies as a method of preserving, promoting and transmitting intangible cultural heritage.
