Espacios gastronómicos para la reintegración social de las personas sin hogar en el casco urbano de Humacao

Abstract

This research focuses on the need for social reintegration of homeless individuals in Humacao. With the increase of this population over the years, the question arises of how we can use food as a tool for social reintegration for these individuals. The literature review of “More Than Bread,” “Writing and Retelling Multiple Ethnographic Tales of a Soup Kitchen for the Homeless,” and “Engaging Homeless Individuals in Discussion about Their Food Experiences to Optimize Wellbeing” helped to understand how successful precedents of soup kitchens for the homeless operate and what characteristics they have. This research uses both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including interviews and surveys, to learn about the needs of individuals and those who dedicate themselves to serving this population in this municipality. The findings indicate that a space is needed where, beyond food, a sense of community and belonging, promoting encounters between people of all socioeconomic statuses. Some suggested design and program strategies include large, open spaces promoting interaction, soft lighting, warm materials, integration of nature, and the inclusion of a chapel, professional development rooms, direct and discreet access to the dining area for those who may not feel ready to enter, and creating ventilated storage spaces for food. The research suggests creating a space that provides the necessary tools to help address the emotional needs that homeless individuals have, but that are often unknown to us.
