Abstract
In Puerto Rico, pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death among the 0-10 years old age group and the third leading cause for the 15-19 years old age group. Adolescents 15 to 19 years old are the group most at risk for developing cancer. At present, there’s a lack of scientific literature addressing this subject of study in Puerto Rico. The presence of resilience in cancer patients has been associated with a better prognosis. The purpose of this study is to identify narratives that show the psychosocial factors that intervene in the development of resilience in adolescent cancer patients and their caregivers. In this qualitative study, I carried out semi-structured interviews at six dyads composed of adolescent patients between 15 and 19 years old, accompanied by their caregivers. The analysis of narratives presented topics in the following categories: adolescence, changes after diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment process, stress coping strategies, protection and risk factors, more stressful aspects, social support and recommendations. Convergences and divergences were observed when comparing the narratives by gender, time with diagnosis, duration of the diagnostic process, type of cancer and between participants. A new psychosocial factor linked to the development of resilience was found when comparing these study findings with the existing literature.
