Abstract
The central aim of this literary investigation is to demonstrate that Rampín embodies inherent traits of the pícaro (rogue), while acknowledging that this figure would later achieve its full evolution and conceptual definition with the publication of Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) and Guzmán de Alfarache (1599 y 1604). I examine Rampín, a character from La Lozana andaluza by Francisco Delicado (1528), within the framework of picaresque theory. Furthermore, based primarily on Julia Kristeva's theory of intertextuality and, moreover, hypertextuality by Gérard Genette, this thesis suggests a new perspective on Rampín, a close reading of the novel La Lozana andaluza by Francisco Delicado (1528), the derived drama La Lozana andaluza by Rafael Alberti (1964), and I also add the poetry collection, Roma, peligro para caminantes (1968), also written by Alberti. Although Rampín is mentioned in various literary studies of the 20th and 21st centuries (see Chapter Two’s review of literature), literary critics have granted a "privileged" position or supremacy to the female protagonist, Lozana. I argue that contemporary criticism has unjustly relegated Rampín to the role of a minor character—a companion or secondary figure, dispensable and subordinated to Lozana’s cunning and sexual prowess. However, it is noteworthy that Rampín, and not only Lozana, contributes to the erotic essence of La Lozana andaluza, a book that was lost for centuries until it was found and rescued in the 19th century. This research is essentially an interpretive reading of Rampín, a character in La Lozana andaluza by Francisco Delicado (1528), within the framework of picaresque theory. While he does not narrate his autobiography—due in part to the novel’s dialogic structure—he shares other inherent traits of the pícaro, such as seeking masters, a desire to climb the social ladder, cleverness and cunning to survive, and a satirical outlook on the society he inhabits. Rampín is a rogue figure who anticipates the artistic conception of Lázaro, the protagonist of Lazarillo de Tormes (1554), but, unlike Lázaro, Rampín possesses a distinctive quality: he is sexually explicit, in keeping with the erotic spirit of this 16th-century novel. Likewise, I will demonstrate that Rampín2 serves as a central axis in many of the plot lines selected by Rafael Alberti in the intertextuality of the work, which he recovered and reinterpreted in the theatrical genre during the 1960s.
