Apenas un rectángulo: imaginarios de la comunidad china en Puerto Rico a través de la gastronomía

Abstract

Este proyecto de maestría está enfocado en la comunidad china en Puerto Rico y su circuito gastronómico. Desde la llegada de los primeros inmigrantes chinos a Puerto Rico en el siglo XIX y en las dos subsiguientes olas migratorias en las décadas de los 50 y los 90, esta comunidad ha tenido una inserción tanto económica y laboral en un nicho en específico: los restaurantes. Aunque también poseen heladerías y supermercados, el restaurante se ha convertido en el ojo de la cerradura por el cual el puertorriqueño promedio imagina y enmarca a esta comunidad. Mediante el género de la crónica, el presente trabajo busca responder de qué manera la gastronomía forma parte de la construcción de un imaginario de los inmigrantes chinos en Puerto Rico y qué transacciones culturales median en este proceso. La primera crónica nos acerca a los vuelos diaspóricos de los chinos en el Caribe desde el relato de dos miembros de esta comunidad y un libro. La segunda se compone de estampas móviles de aquellos negocios que conforman el circuito gastronómico chino en la Isla. La tercera crónica reúne los imaginarios que poseen sobre la comunidad china en la Isla cuatro puertorriqueños asiduos a la comida chino-boricua y cómo construyen dichos imaginarios a partir de la gastronomía.This master's project is focused on the Chinese community in Puerto Rico and its gastronomic circuit. Since the arrival of the first Chinese immigrants to Puerto Rico in the 19th century and in the two subsequent waves of migration in the 1950s and 1990s, this community has had both an economic and labor insertion in a specific niche: restaurants. Although they also have ice cream parlors and supermarkets, the restaurant has become the keyhole through which the average Puerto Rican imagines this community. Through the genre of the chronicle, this work seeks to answer how gastronomy is part of the construction of an image of Chinese immigrants in Puerto Rico and what cultural transactions mediate this process. The first chronicle brings us closer to the diasporic flights of the Chinese in the Caribbean based on the story of two members of this community and a book. The second is made up of vignettes of those businesses that make up the Chinese gastronomic circuit on the Island. The third chronicle gathers the imaginary constructs of four Puerto Ricans assiduous to Chinese-Puerto Rican food about the Chinese community on the Island and how they build this imaginary constructs from gastronomy.
