Safe Havens for All: the Regeneration of Natural Habitats and Wildlife as a Driver for Isla de Roque's Socio-Economic Development

Abstract

This study researches Isla de Roque’s potential to address the socioeconomic struggles surrounding communities such as La Boca and Punta Palmas by focusing on the regeneration of wildlife and habitats. Decades of unnecessary construction and poorly maintained infrastructure have left the area with heavily impacted habitats, residents with a tumultuous relationship with nature, and fishermen with a slew of challenges for an otherwise relaxing, family activity. This research aims to make a case for landscape connectivity, and how strategies employed in this discipline can finally address concerns that have been plaguing Isla de Roque since the decline of Barceloneta’s industrial economy.
