Abstract

This project presents a feasibility study and business plan for creating a worker cooperative of physical wellness professionals in Puerto Rico, focused on serving older adults in Guaynabo. It examines the fitness industry’s labor, regulatory, cultural, and market challenges, including precarious employment, limited oversight, ageism, and the exclusion of vulnerable populations. Using cooperative, legal, psychosocial, and financial frameworks, the study evaluates whether an alternative enterprise model can improve working conditions, democratize service management, and expand access to preventive health services. The project concludes that a phased, community-centered cooperative model is conceptually sound, socially relevant, and financially viable.
