Abstract

The study investigates the impact of the exposure environment on the acquisition of grammatical gender in Italian-Spanish bilingual children, comparing their performance to that of monolingual children. Two main variables were analyzed: (1) the linguistic input received at home (domestic context) and (2) the input from the social and educational environment (general context), considering three age groups (4-5, 6-7, and 8-9 years) and two geographical settings (Italy and Puerto Rico). The study employed experimental processing and production tasks in both languages, focusing on grammatical gender agreement between the determiner and the noun. The results reveal that both the general context and the domestic context of exposure exert a significant and complementary influence on the acquisition of grammatical gender. Bilingual children show development comparable to monolinguals in gender marking, although the quantity and quality of input, as well as the typological similarity between Italian and Spanish, modulate the pace and accuracy of acquisition. Differences are observed depending on the coincidence or divergence of grammatical gender between cognates, and a progressive improvement is seen with age. Moreover, balanced exposure in both contexts favors the consolidation of robust and flexible linguistic representations. In conclusion, the research demonstrates that the interaction between input received at home and in the social environment is decisive for the efficient development of grammatical gender in bilingual childhood. These findings contribute to the understanding of bilingual acquisition mechanisms and underscore the importance of considering the diversity of exposure contexts in educational language planning and support for bilingual children.
