El paso del huracán María, ha puesto en claro el rol vital de los albergues en casos de desastres naturales. Estos refugios brindaron protección durante la tormenta, y posteriormente continuaron fungiendo como hogares temporeros luego de un año de haber ocurrido el desastre. El funcionamiento prolongado de estos espacios impacta la dimensión emocional de las personas en torno al espacio donde habitan, particularmente la de identidad espacial. La presente investigación explora el concepto de apego al lugar, a fin de indagar sobre el efecto que tiene el ambiente espacial habitual en procesos de recuperación y relocalización de comunidades. El estudio contempló el recurso de entrevistas, análisis fotográfico y documentación periodística, para comprender la ruptura del vínculo entre el sujeto y su entorno. Tras la realización del mismo, se pudo encontrar que la identidad comunitaria fortalece la identidad individual ante la destrucción del entorno cotidiano. Los resultados igualmente mostraron que la planificación comunitaria facilita nuevos vínculos con el entorno desconocido en procesos de relocalización. Con su análisis se establecieron parámetros que facilitaron el diseño de una propuesta para centros comunitarios que faciliten la planificación comunitaria dando paso a la relocalización de comunidades establecidas en áreas inundables de Toa Baja.
